Fishing at Inverskilavulin
We have fishing access onto Loch Arkaig, with 3 rods at a time on a boat with professional ghillies. The loch is famous for brown trout, pike and salmon.
Very nearby, fishing on the River Lochy comprises four beats, extending to over 8 miles each, fished in daily rotation by the four parties fishing each week.
Fishing is sold by the beat for the week, commencing on a Monday and up to four rods may fish each beat. There is no Sunday fishing in Scotland. The river is fly-fishing only (barbless doubles only) and a policy of catch and release of all salmon and trout is currently in force (a slight relaxation of this may be in place from 15th June to 15th September only).
Each beat has a fishing hut and boats. If requires, ghilies can be arranged by request at £210 per week. The wading is largely over gently sloping shingle and the majority of the 38 classic salmon pools are easily accessible by car. Most fishermen tend to use a 15 ft fly rod to cover the water effectively with a floating or sink-tip line and flies in size 6 to 10.
The 2003 season saw the 2nd best rod catch in well over a decade with just under 500 salmon and grilse. Over 50% of these were 2+ sea winter salmon of some unheard of proportions. 5 fish were landed over 30 lbs, 11 over 20 lbs and a great many in the high teens. The Lochy recorded the biggest fish in Scotland in 2003 at 36.5 lbs. It also had the biggest springer in the country in 2004 at 34 lbs. Sea trout are also taken and increasing in numbers – the best in 2003 weighed 10 lbs.
A comprehensive restocking policy has been run for some years now and, along with a range of habitat improvements, these measures are beginning to have a noticeable effect, making the Lochy the top-performing river on the west coast of Scotland.
